What is it?
Therapeutic phlebotomy is a medical procedure where a controlled amount of blood is removed from the body to treat conditions that cause too many red blood cells or too much iron. It works much like donating blood, but it’s done for treatment, not donation.

Why Is It Done?
It helps reduce the thickness of the blood and lower iron levels. This improves circulation and reduces the risk of clots, heart attack, or stroke.

Common Conditions Treated With Therapeutic Phlebotomy:

• Polycythemia Vera (PV): Body makes too many red blood cells

• Hemochromatosis: Too much iron stored in the body

• Secondary Polycythemia/Erythrocytosis: High red blood cell levels from low oxygen (e.g., lung disease, sleep apnea, high altitude, smoking)
